Betty Shamel

Betty Shamel began Mud Hen Pottery after a 30-year career as an art teacher. Her formal education includes a BFA from the University of Texas at Austin, MFA from the University of Guanajuato at San Miguel de Allende and MA from Texas A&I University, Kingsville. She has been featured in one-person shows at the Bailey Gallery, Texas A&I in 1968 with paintings and in 1981 batiks, and again in1994 for her pottery and figures. She has shown in professional galleries and exhibited in numerous juried shows: Stockton California, Pioneer Museum and Hagen Galleries. She won awards in the Rio Grand Valley and South Texas Art Leagues, and Tri-Group exhibitions. Her works were displayed in the first and third National Art Educators’ Electronic Galleries. Her pottery, a more recent media, was exhibited in the Dishman Gallery Competitive International in 1991, The 1996 Ventana Gallery Angel Show, The Couples’ Show in Rockport 1998, the Art Museum of South Texas 2000 Art Craft Exhibition, and the Rockport Center for the Arts 3 Dimensional Show 2000. Betty’s latest one person show at All Saints Church Corpus Christi in November 2001 has themes reflecting the artist’s interest in the lives and representations of saints, and as always, her love of the Texas Gulf Coast.

Sculptures for the 2002 Abundance Holliday Show at Ventana Gallery include a crèche of 14 figures, angels, musicians, and saints. Each is a one of a kind creation -- not molded, but thrown on the wheel and decorated with individual designs and hand building. Betty accepts commissions for a favorite saint, but color and design will vary as each pieceis unique.

Betty was honored with a one woman show at the Rockport Center for the Arts in February of 2008. “Painted Surfaces” included recent pottery and retrospective of painting.
