The 2008 Merit Artists have been named by Juror Michelle Locke, Curator of the Permanent Collection at the Art Museum of South Texas. Locke noted the difficult task of narrowing down her choices in a gallery full of variety and quality. See full story for the winners!

Kay Barnebey was invited by Padre Island National Seashore to create a Christmas ornament that will hang on the 2007 White House Blue Room Christmas Tree. She recently attended the special reception hosted by Laura Bush at the White House in Washington, D.C.

Blan Shephard of Victoria, Texas died Tuesday evening at Citizens Hospital. Blan won the Texas State Hair Styling Contest twice, and took two Honorable Mentions in the International Hair Styling contest in New York, before taking the first prize in 1961. She later devoted more of her time to painting. She became intrigued with Monet and went to his gardens in France to paint. She was a member of Rockport Center for the Arts and made her own personal contribution to the development of our Rockport Art Colony. She will be missed.

Filmmakers, Artists, and Enthusiasts from all over the country converged at the 2007 Rockport Film Festival. Over 50 films were screened, over a dozen awards were given, and organizers are already discussing the 2008 Film Festival. Rockport Center for the Arts is proud to have been a part of this successful inaugural event!

Pat Bailey, an exceptionally gifted artist who has struggled with homelessness and is featured in the Austin-based film "Art From the Streets" will exhibit and sale recent works at Rockport Center for the Arts during Film Festival weekend.

"Art From the Streets" will screen Thursday evening (Nov 8) at Main Street Arts.

Jacqueline Pontello, formerly of Southwest Art Magazine, was present on Saturday, October 27 to jury and award winning entries in the Architecture Show. 1st and 2nd place prizes were awarded in Painting, Photographic, and 3D/Non-traditional media categories.

David Murrah, Ph.D, a trustee of the Aransas County Historical Society, gave a talk Saturday October 27 to kick off the opening reception of the Architecture Show at Rockport Center for the Arts. Murrah offered listeners examples of how historic preservation defines a community, and encouraged support for the Aransas County Historical Society.

George Mendoza, a legally blind painter and nationally recognized visionary artist, will give a special Artist Demonstration and Talk on Tuesday, November 6th from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Rockport Center for the Arts. The event is open to the public.

Our dear friend Daniel Brigham passed away on October 13, 2007 from cancer. Dan loved our community and the Arts and surrounded us with his artistic talent. He touched and filled us with his love and talent of culinary arts and gardening.

Marcia Nichols Miller from Rockport/Cuero/Houston Texas passed away suddenly on September 14, 2007 near Cuero, Texas. In addition to having served on boards and charitable organizations throughout her life, Marcia Chaired Rockport Center for the Arts' Tour of Homes Kickoff Party many times, had her home on the 1995 Tour of Homes, underwrote Art Auction Dinners and Kickoff Parties, did flamboyant decorating for numerous Art Center events, and was an avid arts patron. She was a dear friend and generous person who is missed.

Al Baha-Sketchbook is a verbal and visual journal of Koutnik's 1991 visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where her husband was employed as a surgeon at King Fahad Hospital. Although she is an American citizen, she must discard her previous lifestyle and identity to comply with the stringent morays that have controlled women in Saudi Arabia for generations.

Artist Billy Hassell is currently in two places at once; a solo exhibition entitled Migration at the Art Museum of South Texas in Corpus Christi, and as part of a group exhibition entitled Printmaking Now at Rockport Center for the Arts. Billy was present at both opening receptions, and signed limited edition prints of "Red Wing Blackbird" at Rockport Center for the Arts.

Katherine Brimberry, co-founder and co-director of Flatbed Press in Austin, gave a gallery talk on Saturday September 22 to offer an insider's look at Printmaking Now: a group exhibition of original, limited edition prints. The crowd followed Katherine around the gallery as she expounded on the artists, their processes, and the press's role in collaborating with artists. See full story for more on select printmakers included in the show. Printmaking Now continues through October 20, in conjunction with the Garden Gallery's Fiber Arts Exhibition.

Donald and Peggy Pimpler's welded metal sculptures and delicate assemblages sparked conversation during their gallery talk in Rockport Center for the Arts' Garden Gallery. Donald and Peggy shared their ideas and answered questions from the crowd.

The Pimplers' "Bottle Tree" is featured in the August 2007 issue of Southern Living, on page 60.

Walter Samuel (Terry) Falk III, a Rockport Art Association Member Artist and exhibitor in the 2007 Rockport Art Festival, passed away on July 10, 2007. See full story for a letter of remembrance from Ray Owens, a friend of Walter and also a Rockport Art Association Member.

On July 14, 1972 the State of Texas officially recognized the articles of incorporation for the Art Community Center of Corpus Christi submitted by a group of Corpus Christi artists and supporters.

These wonderful people had the vision which has carried on for 35 years. The spirit and dedication continues as strong today as it did then.

The growth they have accomplished would not have been possible if it were not for contributions from people like Barbara McDowell, Ted Anderson and many other talented and generous supporters.

Twenty five new original Hal McCaskill paintings will be featured at Cappy's Restaurant in San Antonio from July 21, 2007 through September 8. Cappy's is located at 5011 Broadway. Mary Lee says that you'll be pleased with the great food at Cappy's when you go to see Hal's new work.

Austin Art Seen, circa 1961 reexamines the Modernist movement in Texas art, the art form that gained popularity during the time AMOA-Laguna Gloria (formerly Laguna Gloria Art Museum) was chartered. Michael Frary, whose work and influence made him a seminal figure in the Rockport Art Community, is included in the exhibition.

Barbara R. McDowell, a fashion illustrator and advertising designer in Atlanta, art director and illustrator for Adcraft Advertising Agency and owner/operator of a graphic design studio, died July 4, 2007. She was 86.

Barbara was a Rockport Center for the Arts Merit Artist in 2005 and a friend of the art center as well as the Art Center of Corpus Christi.

The opening dates are set for Marthe Meas' oil "Int'l Jazz Peace" to be in "The Circular Exhibition":
5 July 2007 it opens in NYC at Hun Gallery 32nd St. 3rd floor . I t's scheduled there from 1-14 July, then 20 July 2007 it opens at Ho Gallery in Seoul, Korea for the last two weeks in July.

Fourteen Chinese brush paintings from Marthe's May "Writing in Ink" solo exhibit are in the city's "Art in Focus" program, on exhibtion through June.

ROCKPORT, TEXAS -- John Aasp, a multimedia artist, has been named Director of Visual Arts for The Rockport Center for the Arts. In this position he will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Art Center’s visual arts programs; planning and installation of all exhibitions; be a member of the Exhibition Committee, RCA Strategic Planning and Sculpture Garden Committees; provide leadership for all art-related areas of the Rockport Art Festival; and will continue to build relationships with artists, art gallery managers and art patrons in Rockport.

President & CEO Kent Williams announced a $6,000 grant from Coastal Bend Community Foundation to 2007 Art Link for Kids. Art Link for Kids is a free summer art camp for children in Aransas County who will be attending Grades 1 through 8 in September. In 2005 two hundred and eighty children participated in Art Link. In 2006 over 330 children were engaged in Art Link. This summer's theme is Marine Life. Please see Children's Programs for additional information on this year's camp.

Blackman's exhibition features acrylic on canvas or multi-media on paper. The "Ventures" portion of her show focuses on lines, texture and colors with no subject matter in mind. Whereas the "Observations" reflects candid drawings based on personal experiences that have been converted to paintings.
The water color exhibition in the Garden Gallery will showcase the works of 11 artists who accompanied Rockport artist Carol Koutnik on an eleven day tour.

Rockport Center for the Arts is honoring the art of Michael Frary and Estelle Stair, two artists who were important to the founding of Rockport's art community, with a retrospective of their work April 11 - May 12. Most of the artwork is from the private collection of relatives and has never before been on public display or offered for sale.

Ceramic artist Nanci Barnes has been named the 2007 Poster Artist for the 38th Annual Rockport Art Festival. She was selected to promote next year’s festival by a special panel of judges, who reviewed the work of dozens of nominated artists.

It has been 10 years since a 3-D artist has been recognized with this honor,” noted Pam Fulcher, art director for the Rockport Center of the Arts. It speaks to her level of talent and accomplishment, that the previous 3-D poster artist was Jesus Moroles.

In a recent 'Hints from Heloise' article, a reader wrote in and had the following to say about storing works of art:
"As a conservator, I want to offer ideas on storing framed and matted works of art. For long-term storage, it's not recommended to keep works in bubbly wrap (the plastic isn't chemically stable over time). It's safe to use for shipping but never in storage. I also wouldn't recommend that any piece be tightly wrapped. Pictures and the material that is used to mat the art need to be able to breathe. But it's not recommended that a piece be left uncovered or exposed to excessive air. Storing art in archival boxes in a vertical position is best." Linda Edquist
