The 2008 National Medal of Arts was awarded to Jesus Moroles and presented by President Bush on November 17, 2008 in an East Room ceremony. Moroles was honored "for his enduring achievements as a sculptor of stone. His granite monuments grace America's landscape." The National Medal of Arts is a presidential initiative managed by the National Endowment for the Arts, and is the highest award given to artists and art patrons by the United States government.

As the 40th anniversary of the Rockport Art Association approaches, the dedication of Charles Umlauf's "Uccelli," donated by longtime Art Center friend and patron Cam Leonard, reminds us that the Art Center we know today was built on generosity, creativity, and companionship. Mr. Leonard, Jesus Moroles (who designed the base) and Harold Phenix were present.

Congratulations to Jena Kirmse who was one of 4 students chosen as 'best actors' out of the 300 students in the University of Texas at Austin theater and dance department. She was granted a scholarship by Actress Marcia Gay Harden. Jena's outstanding work at Rockport-Fulton High School was recognized when she was awarded a Rockport Center for the Arts Scholarship in 2006.

Each year the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center holds a competition for the Wildflower Days Poster Artist. Mary Catherine Gardner's painting of a winecup wildflower will be unveiled in November. Congratulations Mary Catherine! See the winning art for Wildflower Days 2009 on Saturday and Sunday, November 15 and 16. The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is located at 4801 La Crosse Ave. in Austin, Texas. The Center is open on Saturday's from 9 am to 5:30 pm and on Sundays from noon to 5:30 pm. You can also see current work of Mary Catherine's in the RCA Gift Shop.

The Margaret Sue Rust Foundation has donated a gift to the Art Center's Sculpture Garden in memory of Lola L. Bonner, a trustee of the foundation and a former president of the Art Center Board. The sculpture has been commissioned by nationally known wildlife sculptor Sandy Scott, marking the first female sculptor to be added to RCA's Sculpture Garden. The dedication is set for Fall 2009.

Sculpture Garden Founder Cam Leonard recently donated a sculpture by the late Charles Umlauf, whose work is in the collections of the Smithsonian, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. The sculpture will be dedicated into RCA's Sculpture Garden in November.

JOHN PEMBERTON "JACK" COWAN, considered a founding father of sporting art and Texas Coast Wildlife Conservation, died June 27, 2008, in Bristol, Tennessee at age 87. Cowan was born in Bristol, Tennessee on October, 20, 1920.

As part of the Art Center-sponsored Performing Artists Series, Austin-based world music ensemble Mundi put on a stellar performance. Their style weaves Celtic, Gypsy and Classical influences. A crowd of over 250 were present to hear the music on Sunday, January 20, 2008.

After 5 weeks of voting for their favorite artist in the 2007-8 Currents exhibition, the people have chosen Pleasanton-based artist Jeannette Cuevas as the 2008 People's Choice Merit Artist. Cuevas will join 5 other Merit Artists in a group exhibition in August 2008.
