(ROCKPORT, TX) This Spring, the Rockport Center for the Arts will honor the legendary Texas sporting artist John P. (Jack) Cowan, and pay tribute to his influence on fellow artists and the Rockport community. Cowan is probably the most important sporting artist in the state of Texas - not only as artist and avid sportsman, but a supporter of Texas coastal conservation. The exhibition will consist of original works from private collections, as well as a collection of signed giclees, posters, and books available for sale. The event will also feature original works by fellow sports artists including Al Barnes, Herb Booth, John Dearman, Kyle Polzin, and Steve Russell. Free and open to the public, the exhibition will take place Wednesday, April 1 – Saturday, May 9, 2009 at the Rockport Center for the Arts in Rockport, Texas.

An opening reception will be held on Saturday, April 4 at 4:30 pm at the Rockport Center for the Arts. John Aäsp, Director of Visual Arts will conduct a question and answer panel. “This is an opportunity for Rockport to honor such a monumental figure,” says John Aäsp, Director of Visual Arts, of the legendary artist. “Though his influence spread throughout Texas in both sporting art and coastal conservation, Cowan had a strong connection to Rockport society and a unique appreciation for Rockport’s place in the bigger picture.”
