Jan Wendell, 1932-2011
Jan Wendell was one of the founding members of the Rockport Art Association and an enthusiastic supporter of local and area artists. The Rockport Art Guild began in April of 1967 when a group led by Estelle Stair and Jan Wendell founded the organization. She was then an officer when the Guild incorporated as the Rockport Art Association. From 1969 to 1971 she served as President of the Association's Board of Directors. She was a patron of the arts on a local, state and national level participating in artistic events such as the prestigious Sundance Film Festival.

A long-time friend of the late artist Jack Cowan, several of his original paintings, many of which were gifted to the Wendell family by Cowan himself, were exhibited in 2009 at the Art Center's tribute exhibition to Cowan.
"I will always remember the wonderful times we had with Jan in Rockport. She was "one of a kind", a great lady, and a close friend to my late parents. I'm truly saddened to hear of her passing." Jane Cowan (Bristol, TN). "Jan was a beautiful and talented woman who enriched the lives of so many. She will be missed." Kitty Cowan-Allen (Houston, TX).

The Wendell family fireworks on July 4th are an annual reminder of Jan and her family's involvement in the community of Rockport.
