Ranching and wildlife didn’t die with Louis L’amour

The Mission of Wildlife in Focus is to raise public awareness and to promote wildlife and habitat conservation in Texas. We are a 501(c)3not-for-profit organization.

Founded14 years ago as the Coastal Bend Wildlife Photo Contest, our mission was in part to provide photographers a more intimate and pristine venue for wildlife photography while allowing landowners to know and show their land in a different light. Now one of the richest photography contests in North America, it draws top nature photographers from all over the country to compete. Three world-renowned judges selected the prize-winning photographs.

The Wildlife Photo Contest

Land owners partner with photographers to capture photographs of wildlife and habitat and share equally in the winnings which generally exceed$50,000. The resulting images have become an educational tool showing wildlife and its habitat, bringing awareness of the importance of conservation. The biennial contests are open to landowners in the23-county Coastal Bend area. The photo contest provides landowners a glimpse into the economic and conservation rewards of nature photography, while showing them how this effort can prevent fragmentation of their land.

Wildlife in Focus books

Each book showcases winning images from the most recent photo contest. The books capture an intimate and artistic view of wildlife as seen through the eyes of photographers, allowing us to see beyond the ranch gates of Texas where our precious wildlife coexist in a habitat with humans. This world class photography book features birds, mammals, insects, arachnids, reptiles and amphibians, along with stunning sunrises and sunsets. With the help of sponsors, the books are distributed to classrooms with a professionally prepared curriculum so that students may discover local wildlife and the importance of conservation.

This book is dedicated to a special man

Lon Cartwright is a life-long rancher and owner of the Twin Oaks Ranch near Lagarto,Texas. Mr. Cartwright has developed a thriving operation that has survived for generations. He is a multifaceted entrepreneur and conservationist. It is with great delight that we honor Lon’s dedication to preserving the ranch lands of South Texas.
