RCA Remembers Salvador Rivera
Salvador Rivera Gonzalez passed away on November 5, 2014. He was born on January 4, 1956 in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon Mexico and is preceded in death by his father, Salvador Eliseo Rivera Muñoz.

Salvador was an accomplished artist, illustrator and writer. Due to a conviction to link himself artistically with the community, Rivera spent many years in Mexico studying the social cultures. His desire to teach young people about art and art history led him to the Mexico Superior School for Teachers (Escuela Normal Superior de Mexico) where he received his teaching certificate in Social Sciences.

He taught high school for seven years and motivated to learn more about the connection between arts and culture, he continued his studies while working. “Learn more, teach others and apply that knowledge” was the driving philosophy during those early years as a teacher and student. After attending the National Institute of Arts in Mexico City, Mexico, Rivera later earned his BA in Sociology with a specialty in culture at the University National Autonomous of Mexico (Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico) in 1995.

Although he was a relative newcomer to South Texas, Rivera supported the fundraising efforts of the Art Museum of South Texas, participated in a number of local group exhibitions at the Art Center of Corpus Christi and recently held a Merit Artist Exhibition 2013 at the Rockport Center for the Arts.

In addition to his work as an artist, Rivera was a founding member of Visual Arts Collective (CAV 99) and member of various organizations and art associations in Mexico. He served as Curator and Deputy Director of Cultural Development at the State Council for Culture and the Arts of Hidalgo (Mexico), as well as Head of Human Resources Unit Educational Services in Tlaxcala, Mexico.

Salvador Rivera had an extensive history as an artist, educator, arts advocate and friend to the community. His works span more than 30 years and gave voice to his passion for art and motivation to link with our culture.

He is survived by his mother, Maria Arcelia Gonzalez of Pachuca, Mexico, his wife, Maria Elsa Rivera of Corpus Christi, TX; sons: Cesar Augusto (Viridiana), Vladimir, Salvador, Alejandro Aparicio, and daughter, Frida Itzel Rivera; brothers: Carlos (Isabel) Rivera, Eduardo (Rosi) Rivera, Fidel (Karina) Rivera and sisters: Bertha Rivera, Maria de Jesus Rivera (Miguel Rodriguez), Maria Eugenia Rivera, granddaughter, Tatiana Rivera, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

“La vida es para vivirse plenamente aquí y ahora, no importa que se haga, sobrevive como puedas sin embargo, vive como quieras. Sé feliz.”
