Rockport Center for the Arts Announces Search for Director of Visual Arts

Rockport Center for the Arts, a vibrant and prestigious multi-disciplinary arts organization of 47 years, with over 700 members, located on Aransas Bay in Rockport Texas, is seeking a creative, energetic and inspired professional in the arts with multi-tasking and team experience for the position of Director of Visual Arts.

Position Requirements:

A challenging opportunity awaits the right individual who has earned a minimum of a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from an accredited university, or other equivalent Bachelor (Master’s) degree,in addition to 5 years of experience in the field of visual or studio art, and experience working in an art center, visual arts organization, and/or commercial art gallery. 

This position requires excellent curatorial skills, writing skills and graphic design skills with an ability to work on a Macintosh platform. Knowledge and understanding of Texas Commission on the Arts grant guidelines and requirements helpful. Position requires work on some weekends and evenings.  Must be able to lift and handle items that weigh up to 50 lbs.

 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the reputation of the Art Center’s artistic vision and crafting a creative direction for the visual arts program.
  • Maintain and increasing the strong relationships that have been built with the Rockport-Fulton art, business, government and philanthropic communities.
  • Work with the Exhibition Committee to select nine (9) exhibitions annually, including creating ‘Requests for Proposals’ and ‘Call for Artists’ for juried shows.
  • Lead the exhibition design for all shows, coordinating delivery schedules of all exhibitions and participating in receipt of works as well as the installation of the exhibits.
  • Design and placing publicity and marketing materials, including ads, posters, eblasts, social media channels, and website content.
  • Manage and implementing the annual artist-in-residence program in collaboration with the Director of Education.
  • Arrange for traveling exhibits and managing exhibition contracts.
  • Chair the Exhibition Committee, the Sculpture and Art Acquisition Committee, the Poster Artist Nominating Committee, the Permanent Collection Committee and as the Artist Chairman of the Live Auction.
  • Develop budgets for all of the activities within all areas of responsibility, and tracking the actual financial performance of the activities and gallery art sales.
  • Work collaboratively with staff to enhance the artistic integrity of the Art Center and to increase its contribution to our community and with the Executive Director to support the overall direction of the organization.
  • Prepare grants, grant requests, budgets for requests and reporting.
  • Maintaining visible profile in the communities of Rockport-Fulton, the art communities of the Coastal Bend region and a statewide presence in markets of interest to the Art Center.
  • Write press releases and preparing media packets.
