2011 Rockport Art Festival Poster Artist Announced
Congratulations to Betty Shamel, a long-time Rockport resident and Art Center member who was named the 2011 Rockport Art Festival Poster Artist on September 18.

Having recently completed a solo exhibition at the Art Center in 2008 of mostly ceramic work along with her colorful acrylic paintings, Shamel will focus on her painting for the 2011 Poster Artist show, but expect to see some accents of her whimsical pottery. Most recently, her work was featured as part of a group show called "West Texas: Nine Perspectives" earlier in 2010. We are excited and honored to have Betty on the list of Rockport Art Festival Poster Artists!

More about Betty:

Betty Shamel began Mud Hen Pottery after a 30-year career as an art teacher. Her formal education includes a BFA from the University of Texas at Austin, MFA from the University of Guanajuato at San Miguel de Allende and MA from Texas A&I University, Kingsville. She has been featured in one-person shows at the Bailey Gallery, Texas A&I in 1968 with paintings and in 1981 batiks, and again in 1994 for her pottery and figures. She has shown in professional galleries and exhibited in numerous juried shows. She won awards in the Rio Grande Valley and South Texas Art Leagues, and Tri-Group exhibitions. Her works were displayed in the first and third National Art Educators’ Electronic Galleries.

Her pottery, a more recent media, was exhibited in the Dishman Gallery Competitive International in 1991, The 1996 Ventana Gallery Angel Show, The Couples’ Show in  Rockport 1998, the Art Museum of South Texas 2000 Art Craft Exhibition, and the Rockport Center for the Arts 3 Dimensional Show 2000. Betty’s solo show at All Saints Church Corpus Christi in November 2001 had themes reflecting the artist’s interest in the lives and representations of saints, and as always, her love of the Texas Gulf Coast.
