Art Center Announces First Artist-in-Residence Programs
Thanks to the support of an anonymous donor, RCA will host two resident artists in 2012. Resident artist programs provide a unique opportunity for visiting artists to interact with our membership through exhibitions, workshops, informal paint-outs and exhibitions. Bringing fresh perspective, visiting artists are encouraged to draw upon their stay in Rockport for inspiration, creating an original body of work for exhibition while sharing their techniques and interests. In short, a residency program fosters valuable relationships between artists and art centers, encouraging development both in the artist's work and within the community the artist visits.

RCA is grateful to Trey Bell and the family of Charlotte Shannon Hilton for the use of her family's downtown Rockport home. Charlotte typically used the space for her own studio and for visiting artists and guests. In honor of Charlotte, her family home will remain an active location helping cultivate the arts in Rockport.

Rising Eyes Residency (Student Artist in Residence, StAR)

Rising Eyes of Texas is an annual juried exhibition for college students emerging in the visual arts. In 2012 the show will feature 40 artists representing 19 Texas colleges and universities. In addition to the top three prizes awarded by an invited juror, the Art Center will select its first student artist-in-residence to include a two-week stay in Rockport. The student artist will be encouraged to draw upon their Rockport experience while creating new work for a solo exhibition in RCA's Garden Gallery in August.

Professional Artist in Residence (PAR)

The professional artist residency provides a unique opportunity for our membership to share and work with an established artist in the field. In addition, the visiting artist will be encouraged to draw inspiration from their three week stay, carrying the Rockport experience with them through their career. The visiting artist will create new work, host workshops and/or informal paint outs, culminating in a solo show and gallery talk.

2012 PAR: Ewoud de Groot

The Art Center welcomes Netherlands artist Ewoud de Groot as its first professional artist-in-residence. A two-time exhibitor in Shorelines and multiple exhibitor in the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum's Birds in Art Exhibition, Ewoud de Groot demonstrates an acute passion for naturalism balanced with a characteristic abstract style. Ewoud is currently represented by Gerald Peters Gallery, Santa Fe, NM, among others. Ewoud will arrive in Rockport in October 2012. More details will be available soon!
