Day 1

Introduction to drawing and sketching

Introduction to the 4 tonal technique of sketching and painting and understanding values

Introduction to painting a simple shape with primary colors

Introduction to color mixing 

Understanding light and shapes

 

Day 2

How to creating a tonal study using 4 tonal techniques and value scales

Compositional design concepts

Planning and painting a tonal study to a full painting

Introduction to texturing, splattering and scratching techniques in watercolor

Introduction to masking techniques in watercolor

 

Day 3

Painting a watercolor, from planning, concept design to finish. Tying it all together.    

 

*I’ll provide examples and photo reference material for the classes.

About the Instructor

Al Kline is the President of the Watercolor Society of South Texas (WSSTX.ORG).  

He was born in Holland to Dutch parents.  He moved to the United States as a young child.  He showed interest in art including watercolor at a young age. He spent the majority of his working life providing medicine and surgical services to his community for the past 30 years.  

In 2017, he re-discovered the art of drawing and watercolor and was voted as president of the Watercolor Society of South Texas in 2018.  

In 2020, he began to focus more on teaching watercolor for the Watercolor Society of South Texas, which has a rich history of promoting watercolor art in South Texas for the past 50 years.  

Through teaching, and now online instruction, he has gained international recognition as a watercolor artist.  He has won numerous awards in both local and state-wide shows.
