About Greta Watkins
As long as I can remember, I've always been involved with some form of art and creative process. As an adult, I worked for several years in clay, focusing on handbuilt porcelain. Eventually I experienced frustration with the waiting- for clay to dry, for the kiln to be fired, etc, and turned to a more direct medium, handmade paper. I worked with handmade paper for about 12 years, exploring texture, pattern, light and shadow.
In 1995, I decided to return to school to finally finish that art degree that I'd begun 23 years earlier. The figure drawing and painting classes I took as I worked toward my degree (BFA, Sam Houston State University '98), gave me new direction as an artist. I like the directness of painting, the marks that can be made, the fact that you can sometimes see the decisions I've made as I worked.
Over the last several years, I’ve really enjoyed painting small. I often set up little still life arrangements with vintage toys, especially Fisher Price Little People.
