Lecture and Hands-on Workshop Description:

Mexico, a country with a culturally diverse heritage, boasts a vibrant and renowned art scene. From ancient pre-Columbian art to contemporary masterpieces, Mexican art has captivated global audiences. In this workshop, Purón and you will embark on a journey to explore the various art movements and figurative iconography that influences the popular and contemporary art for which Mexico is celebrated.  From the Virgin of Guadalupe to revolutionary figures Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata, international super star Frida Kahlo, and lucha libre rivals El Santo and Blue Demon, Mexican iconography has influenced contemporary art on both sides of the border.

The class will start with a lecture and presentation that will cover Mexican iconography influences starting with pre-Columbian art.  Mexico's art scene is a tapestry of creativity, spanning ancient legacies to contemporary expressions. Through pre-Columbian art, folk traditions, colonial influences, modern revolutions, political satire, pop culture and beyond; Mexican Iconography in Contemporary Art will captivate you with its diversity, innovation, and cultural relevance.

The practical part of the workshop will take place over the course of two days.  Immerse yourself and awaken Mexico's vibrant artistic language within you, and discover the captivating stories woven into a masterpiece you will create using the technique of your choice: drawing; collage; transfer image; watercolor; acrylic; oil; or any combination thereof.

Materials Included

Participants in the Workshop will be in a Mexican Iconography Pop-Up Exhibition of work they created that will take place at Anita Diebel Gallery Saturday, May 18, 5-7PM!
