Rockport Center for the Arts Invites You To
Oaxaca City, Mexico

Monday, March 3—Sunday, March 9, 2025

Curated by Executive Director Luis Purón and AtravesArte

Oaxaca is in southern Mexico. It is bordered by the states of Guerrero to the west, Puebla to the northwest, Veracruz to the north, and Chiapas to the east. In ancient times Oaxaca was inhabited by more than a dozen indigenous groups, most notably the Zapotec and Mixtec cultures. The Zapotec established a political and cultural centre at Monte Albán, near the present-day city of Oaxaca, about the 1st century bce.

Oaxaca's diversity is reflected in its popular art: pottery, woodcarving, weaving, basketry, candle making, embroidery, and many more crafts are practiced here. Collectors from all over the world come to Oaxaca to purchase the folk art created by skilled Oaxacan artisans.

Well-known features of Oaxacan cuisine include ingredients such as chocolate. Oaxaca is also known for cheese, mezcal, and grasshoppers (chapulines), with dishes such as tlayudas, Oaxacan-style tamales, and seven notable varieties of mole sauce.

The architecture of Oaxaca is distinguished by its blend of indigenous and colonial influences. Traditional Zapotec and Mixtec cultures have left a remarkable impact on the local design, evident in the archaeological site of Monte Albán.
