Course Description
In this weekend workshop students will learn various methods for altering wheel thrown forms and combining wheel throwing with slab construction. Decoration techniques such as texturing, stencils, and silk-screen will also be utilized. As an added bonus in the final segment of the workshop, Stan will share basic concepts behind the classification of ceramic raw materials and their function in glazes. This workshop is intended for intermediate to advanced level students.
About the Instructor
Stan Irvin received his MFA in Ceramics from The University of Texas at Austin in 1974. He recently moved his studio from Austin to Rockport after a 38 year career of teaching ceramics and sculpture at St. Edward's University in Austin.
He specializes in altered wheel-thrown vessel forms and more recently printing on clay. Stan's work can be seen at Windway Gallery in Rockport, Austin Pottery Studio and Gallery in Austin, at the Texas Clay Festival held annually in Gruene, Texas., and at his studio/gallery in down town Rockport, Texas.
In addition to shows, Stan teaches a variety of clay workshops. Past awards include Best of Show at the Greater Austin Clay Arts Association and first place in the Texas Teapot Tournament. More recently he received Honorable Mention in the 2022 Rockport Center For The Arts Members Show. His work has been included in numerous state and national juried competitions, as well as the Art of the Pot studio tour in Austin.
