Course Description
In this workshop, the focus will be on a variety of sgraffito techniques. Sgraffito is a decoration technique whereby lines and shapes are carved through a colored slip that contrasts with the clay color. This typically involves a dark slip on a light-colored clay or vice versa. Some other possible topics include:
o Handles
o Lids that fit
o Trimming techniques
o Wheel throwing
Stan’s work will be on exhibit in the upstairs gallery at RCA Oct. 12 to November 17, so this workshop will be an excellent opportunity to ask questions and see examples of Stan’s work and process.
This workshop is open to beginners to advanced wheel throwers and/or hand builders. Stan will create and have ceramic pieces already made ahead of time for students to be able to carve on.
Tool List:
1. Typical wheel throwing tools; bucket, sponge, potters’ knife, needle tool,
sponge, metal ribs (with and without teeth), wire cutter.
2. Sure Form tool (small rasp typically used for sheet rock but also excellent
for clay work)
3. Kemper LD-5 ribbon loop tool (typical tool used for trimming bottoms of
wheel thrown pots)
4. Kemper #4 ribbon tool (typical tool used for trimming bottoms of
wheel thrown pots)
5. Kemper D2 wire loop tool (for more detail carving)
6. Kemper W22 or W24 small wire loop tool for carving approximately 1/8" wide lines.
