Testimonial from a Past Student: As a "newcomer" to oil painting, I have found Kelly to be a supportive and systematic oil painting teacher. I have taken two previous classes [both two-day classes] and am currently signed up for another one. She is an outstanding teacher, methodical in her preparation and approach. She is the perfect person to start or reinforce your oil painting journey. —- Terry Baiamonte
About the Instructor:
Growing up along the Texas Gulf Coast, Kelly Best Bourgeois developed a profound and lifelong love of nature. As a teen, she painted seriously and sold many of her works, but pursued a more academic path in college, then a professional career as a physician, specializing in Anesthesiology. Kelly kept her hand in art while practicing medicine and raising her family by taking classes at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts Glasell School of Art and the Art League of Houston. In more recent years, she has also studied in workshops in Roundtop, TX, New Orleans, LA, Scottsdale, AZ, Monhegan Is., ME, and the Provence region of France. She particularly enjoys painting en plein air with oil paint or gouache and using those works as inspiration for her studio paintings. Kelly retired from medicine in 2020 to focus more on her passion for art. In 2021 she had her first solo exhibition, Deep in the Heart, featuring Texas landscapes based on paintings from her travels across Texas during the pandemic and shown in the Kucera Gallery at the Art Center of Corpus Christi. In 2022, through the generous support of the Joe Barnhart Foundation, the Beeville Art Museum hosted her exhibition Lone Star Gifts, and in 2023 Kelly’s works were featured as part of the Houston Arts District Sawyer Yards’ landscape exhibition The Loud Quiet. In 2024 she was featured in the two artists Houston Exhibition titled Oceans: Echoes of Existence, also in Sawyer Yards. Her painting Radiant Cadence was recently selected for the Houston Airport Artist Loan Program. Best Bourgeois’ artwork is in private collections across the U.S. and as far away as the UK and Warsaw, Poland. She enjoys teaching workshops and welcomes commissions and visitors to her Sabine Street Studio #116 in the Houston Arts District.
Artist Statement:
I love painting things from and of the Earth. From the topography of the land, to the changing weather, and flora and fauna across our country and the world, I have been captivated and entranced by our planet's diverse beauty for as long as I can remember. Through my paintings, I want viewers to feel that powerful intimate, connection to our mighty yet fragile Earth, and to protect it so future generations may do the same.
