tHE sTORY OF THE ROCKPORT-FULTON ART COLONY DOCUMENTARY

The small Texas Gulf Coast towns of Rockport and Fulton have supported the oldest continuing art colony in Texas since 1948.  This film tells the story of its founder, Simon Michael, and his students, who created a robust art tradition with scenes of the area’s coastal landscapes, harbor life and wildlife.  Michael’s continuing legacy is documented with the community being named “one of the top ten coastal art colonies in the US.”   Interviews with representative artists recount how Michael’s students built a robust art association that continues as the Rockport Center for the Arts with its long-standing Rockport Art Festival.   The Colony’s contributions to conservation are also noted through the artwork of its Sporting  Artists, who helped pass legislation to protect habitat and wildlife.  The Rockport Cultural Arts District, designated by the State of Texas as one of 54 in the State to honor its artistic heritage, produced the film as part of its continuing activities to preserve and promote the art colony.  Film maker Carla Tank is a journalist who moved to Rockport from Brazil.   The documentary is based on a Texas A&M University Press book, “The Story of the Rockport-Fulton Art Colony:  How a Texas Coastal Town Became An Art Enclave.”

WORLD OCEANS WEEK 2020

The Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station is a ship that sits on nearly two miles of ice and moves thirty-three feet per year. Winter is most of the year and darkness sets in for months. During the winter it’s cold with temperatures that can exceed minus 100F and wind chill making it much colder. Wayne L. White, a Rockport Texas resident was the winter manager and captain of that ship for 2017, 2019 and 2020. In 2020 Wayne produced a short video for the Explorers Club of New York (of which he is a member) for World Oceans Week. Danny Hampton, who was the crew’s steward, shot the video and did the edits. For an amateur production the final product sent north was well received. Making a video under such extreme conditions has challenges from the cold killing batteries and lighting to freezing body parts. The outtakes are attached to this 2.0 version and may be more entertaining than the video.
